Specific Phobia

Specific Phobia refer to excessive fear of particular objects, animals or situations. The impairment associated with specific phobia is usually limited. But their co-existence in Depression & other Anxiety Disorders can increase their associated disability.

Epidemiology:

Specific Phobia is the most common type of Anxiety disorders with 12 month prevalence of 1.9%-8.7%.

Onset : 50% have onset prior to the age of 8 years & almost all have onset by the age of 12 years.

Onset is slightly earlier in males.

Different types of Specific Phobia:

1. Animal Phobia:

This is the most common type of specific phobia. For example, fear of:

  • Dogs
  • Snakes
  • Spiders
  • Mice
  • Insects

2. Situational Phobia:

  • Flying
  • Driving
  • Going over bridges or in tunnels
  • Using elevators

3. Natural Environmental Phobia:

  • Storms
  • Dark Rooms

4. Blood-Injection-Injury Phobia:

  • Blood
  • Injection or transfusion
  • Injury

5. Other Phobias:

  • Loud Sounds
  • Heights
  • Clowns
