Schizophrenia & Suicide

Suicide is the leading cause of premature death among people with schizophrenia. Approximately 5-6% of Schizophrenic Patients die by suicide.

Often, suicide in schizophrenia occurs without any prior warning. Command Hallucinations are major contributor to high risk of suicides. Presence of Depression in schizophrenia also increases the chances of suicide.

Schizophrenic Patients at risk of Suicide:

  1. Young men who once had high expectations from life.
  2. Patients who have lost faith in the effectiveness of treatment.
  3. Patients with co-morbid substance abuse.

Management of Patients at risk:

  1. Clozapine may have some efficacy in reducing suicidal ideation in patients with prior hospitalization for suicidality.
  2. Antidepressants may be effective by reducing Depressive episodes in schizophrenia.
