About the Author:
Dale Carnegie (1888 – 1955) was an American writer, lecturer & developer of courses in self improvement, salesmanship, corporate training, public speaking & interpersonal skills. He wrote the book ‘How to Win Friends & Influence People’ in 1936. It was bestselling book at that time & remains popular even today.
Summary of the Book:
The core idea of this book is that it is possible to change other people’s behaviour by changing one’s behaviour towards them.
Carnegie urges us to try our best to never complain, condemn or criticise people. Instead we should attempt to understand why people are as they are. We should never give negative feedback when someone shares new idea with us, even if we don’t like the idea. Giving honest & sincere appreciation is the only way to make someone do something for us with a happy heart. We should also think about things from other people’s perspective. We can easily make rapport & be more popular if we genuinely take interest in other people’s interest.
Carnegie explains that we should encourage others to talk about themselves & listen to them with interest. The key aspect to build rapport with people is to find ways to connect with them. If we want to be appreciated & feel important, we should make others feel appreciated & important first.
Carnegie also urges to avoid arguments. We should be mindful not to judge anyone. Behaving & acting as if we were already happy will tend to actually make us happy.
